Alberto Pitalua is a self-taught Surrealist painter and illustrator, born in Málaga, Spain. Art has always played an important role in his life. Since he was a child, he was always interested in art, spending most of his time drawing and painting, taking part in art contests and developing his artistic vision.

He studied English at university and has worked as a teacher all these years, without losing his passion for art. In Málaga, he attended several art courses and workshops where he met other artists who encouraged him to keep developing his artistic skills. Then, in 2014, he moved to Shrewsbury, England, where he started his adventure as a professional artist. Since then, he has had several solo exhibitions, has taken part in several group shows and art fairs both in the UK and Spain, and has started an exciting career as a Fine Art Tutor.

In 2020, new opportunities brought him to Barcelona, Spain, where he currently lives and works, developing his art and preparing new works for future exhibitions.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My work is varied and distinctive. It reflects my inner worlds: a collection of visions, portraits, settings and memories that I use to express my fears, fantasies, and dreams.  

I usually create my work in series or around themes that I then develop further. Here I have compiled some of the most important series I have developed over the years:

Human figure

My compositions of floating bodies represent a collage of skin, limbs, and gestures that evoke intimate experiences. These figures—mountains of suspended bodies in search of an impossible balance—evoke the fragility of the moment, the constant tension between stability and change. Like life itself, they are always in transition, in metamorphosis.

Portraits

In the portraits, the fragmentation of the face and the experimentation of form become a way to explore the subconscious: what is unseen, what lies hidden beneath the surface. These works delve into the multiple dimensions of our mind, revealing the different versions of the self that coexist and evolve over time.

Cityscapes

My cities emerge as a collection of memories of architecture and travel. Suspended in an impossible balance, they defy gravity and appear as floating visions, closer to dreams than to reality. Each work evokes the fragility of memory: an image that slowly fades, leaving behind the lingering emotion of a place both experienced and imagined at the same time.

Animals

The animal collections explore a universe where animals transcend their recognizable forms to become imagined creatures. Through experimentation with color, form, and composition, surrealist figures emerge that invite contemplation and evoke a sense of magic and mystery. Each piece offers an encounter with the unknown, a space where I like to transform nature into a poetic and symbolic language.
