Alberto Pitalua is a self-taught Surrealist painter and illustrator, born in Málaga, Spain. Art has always played an important role in his life. Since he was a child, he was always interested in art, spending most of his time drawing and painting, taking part in art contests and developing his artistic vision.

He studied English at university and has worked as a teacher all these years, without losing his passion for art. In Málaga, he attended several art courses and workshops where he met other artists who encouraged him to keep developing his artistic skills. Then, in 2014, he moved to Shrewsbury, England, where he started his adventure as a professional artist. Since then, he has had several solo exhibitions, has taken part in several group shows and art fairs both in the UK and Spain, and has started an exciting career as a Fine Art Tutor.

In 2020, new opportunities brought him to Barcelona, Spain, where he currently lives and works, developing his art and preparing new works for future exhibitions.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My work is rooted in Surrealism. Working primarily with oils, acrylics, graphite, and colored pencils, I create visual spaces that give people a chance to pause, take a breath, and step away from the noise of daily life.

My creative process begins as a personal refuge. Stepping into the studio allows me to retreat from superficial distractions and enter a space of quiet focus. Here, the work starts intuitively through spontaneous sketching—allowing ideas to surface directly from the subconscious and deep introspection. In this sense, art functions for me as a form of therapy and continuous self-discovery, where raw thoughts and internal states gradually find their visual form.

Across my different series—whether exploring the human figure, Surreal portraits, imaginative architecture, or the quiet presence of animals—I look for moments of intimacy. Each subject serves as a distinct doorway into the inner world, to explore various concepts such as transformation, impermanence and the power of the subconscious.

Ultimately, I view each piece as an open invitation—a surreal, intimate space where viewers can slow down, look closely, and connect with their own subconscious.
